Following in the spirit of Rotary International (RI), the Four Seasons Rotary Club practices
"Service Above Self". Our projects are both local and international in scope.
INTERNATIONAL SERVICE:
From the bringing drinking water to the school children of remote areas of Ecuador, wheelchairs to children in South America, and "Shelter Boxes" (10 man tents with cooking utensils and supplies for several months) to the tsunami victims (and others). We have also contributed funds for Katrina relief. Annually we ring the bell for the Salvation Army to bring comfort and cheer to people worldwide through that organization. Our club has contributed to the RI effort to eradicate polio, worldwide. Our projects are both large and small.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Locally we not only are founders and sponsors of Rotary Park, in Hendersonville, but annually hold the Arbor Day Celebration there. At that celebration we plant additional trees to coordinate with the other improvements we have made, such as adding pathways, playground equipment or flag pole. We hold an annual Christmas party for the children of the Headstart program - complete with Santa giving out gifts; donate Teddy Bears to the local office of the State Troopers who distribute them to children who are traumatized in auto accidents throughout the year; together with the Hendersonville "Noon" club, we hold the "Bids for Kids" project which raises money for our scholarships to Blue Ridge Community College and to the Rotary Leadership Camp.
VOCATIONAL SERVICE: In the areas of student and professional development we sponsor international student "Youth Exchanges" and young professional "Group Study Exchanges". We participate in the "Writing Buddies" program with 5th grade students from Hillandale Elementary and donate a book to local schools on behalf of each of our program speakers. We also built a "moon box" for Bruce Drysdale Elementary. Finally we sponsor an Interact club at one of the high schools, and a Rotoract club at Blue Ridge Community College. Both of those clubs assist us with many of our projects as well as run their own fund-raising and charitable programs.
FUND RAISING:
To accomplish all these and many more projects, we have several fund raising activities during the year. We have held barbecues, chili cook-offs, rummage sales, sold and delivered Christmas trees, held auctions, and run parking lots for town events. With matching funds from the district and from RI, we have leveraged our club contributions with their grants and together we have raised tens of thousands of dollars so that we can truly make a difference both locally and globally. Last, but not least, in doing all that we do,
we have fun!
